I agree with you. I’m curious what you think, as the “Answer Engine” moves closer to the user, how this looks in terms of protecting privacy and giving users control, and DID, especially in light of the new Internet protocol proposals from the UN &ITU (now called future, vertical communications networks, or FVCNs) which are essentially top down internets, with total censorship & tracking.
Privacy: mixed, because when you can choose any model you prefer, the models out there could all have varying approaches to individual privacy. On the other hand, if you infer on your local device you won't have to share your search queries with anyone else, and your inference could integrate private information only you keep without distributing it. As far as govt regulation --> outside authoritarian regimes that can implement comprehensive firewalls and controls, it will be hard to put the genie back in the bottle and regulation will be ineffective.
Along with user control, comes the concept of users being able to sell (or share for free) their own data on a permissioned basis.
I truly hope that what you say in terms of governmental (and non-governmental) control is true. My fear is that this is the litmus test to determine what is, or isn’t an authoritarian regime…
As usual, brilliant analysis & writing, Jon!

Freedom vs tyranny?
